A Wrecked Trip to Coron - 18-23 Jan 2011

A Wrecked to Coron Trip by Dagomir Kaszlikowski

On 24th September 1944 US Navy attacked a Japanese fleet of 24 support ships anchored in Coron Bay and around Busuanga Island in the Philippines. The attack was a spectacular military success resulting in virtual annihilation of the fleet. The attack sent to the bottom of the sea eight ships in Coron Bay itself making it a spectacular wreck diving site. If you are interested in a detailed historical account of that battle you can find it here: http://www.coronwrecks.com/

I just got back from Living Seas' GUE Dive Extravaganza 2008. It was an awesome, awesome trip that I can safely say set the bar extremely high for everyone who attended. I have taken away so many precious memories that I can now die a happy man. Yes, the trip was that good.

Malapascua, Thresher Shark Hunt - 27 Feb - 03 Mar 2008

Well, our first major overseas trip this year was to Malapascua, Philippines, home to the infamous thresher shark. A group of 14 divers took the plunge and came with us on our Thresher Shark Hunt. Most of the group were GUE and half were actually Tech divers, this made for interesting dinner conversation throughout the trip. Definitely enjoyable company!

We arrived in Cebu airport after a late flight out of the Singapore Budget Terminal on Cebu Pacific Air. Not the most ideal time to travel, but I'm told that it's one of the few airlines that fly to Cebu direct. Getting off the airplane at about 3am, we then boarded a few vans bound for the coast. Not the most ideal thing to do after an uncomfortable flight, we endured bad roads and horrible driving to get to the jetty in about another 3 hrs. We then boarded a ferry that took us to Malapascua Island.

GUE Dive Extravaganza - 19-21 Oct 2007

by Terence Lee

Last weekend I was on the MV Black Manta for a weekend dive trip organized by Living Seas. Living Seas is home of GUE instructor Gideon Liew and he and his crew organized the first GUE Annual Dive Extravaganza 2007. The Black Manta is a large and pretty luxurious boat for this part of the world. We had somewhere in the region of 25 divers and we all settled comfortably in the cabins, dive deck, and saloon areas. Living Seas had been working on this trip for several months and organized all the logistics, including delivery of helium and oxygen bottles and the gas mixing. Over last several years, in no small part due to Gideon’s efforts, a sizable group of GUE trained divers has formed in the region. It’s remarkable that Living Seas was able to fill just about the entire boat with GUE trained divers. We even had 2 guys visiting from Australia and one from Shanghai. Probably the best thing about it was the fact that many people on board knew or had dived with one another; it was great to dive with old friends and make new ones.

Seven Skies and Igara on the Black Manta - 19-21 Oct 2007

The GUE Annual Dive Extravanganza was held on the 19th to 21st October 2007. LivingSeas chartered the luxurious liveaboard the Black Manta for a weekend of wrecks in the South China Sea.

We had a full charter and 20 of the region's GUE divers came in to Singapore to join Gideon and the rest of the LivingSeas team on the boat. There were divers from Perth, Thailand, America and Singapore. Half the boat consisted of technical divers, which was good as some of the recreational divers had a chance to see what technical diving was about for the first time.

The boat set off from Tanah Merah at 7:30 pm on Friday evening and we headed straight for the Seven Skies wreck.
